ROAD SIGN READING
This BMW retrofit adds a speed limit indicator to the vehicle, which shows the driver in the instrument cluster and on the head-up display the currently recognized speed limit, with additional signs in effect in certain situations, such as no overtaking and no overtaking. Additionally, the speed limit indicator can provide warnings if the current speed limit is exceeded.
There are two options for speed limit indicators. In this case, an indicator without forecasting is described. Depending on the configuration, there may additionally be a “predictive speed limit indicator”.
The KAFAS camera recognizes road signs along the road surface, as well as in traffic control systems. Road signs with additional information, such as “Humidity” are also recognized, checked and displayed as necessary based on analysis of vehicle data (for example, the active signal of the windshield wipers). Some additional signs are taken into account during the analysis, but are not shown in the instrument cluster.
By combining data from the KAFAS camera and the navigation system, the current speed limit can be displayed even without the use of road signs.
The overtaking prohibition is only taken into account by the traffic sign recognition system if it is indicated on the road sign. Road markings indicating that overtaking is prohibited are not taken into account. This information is not displayed in the instrument cluster or on the head-up display.
- Warning when exceeded. Selecting this setting activates or deactivates the flashing of important information in the instrument cluster and head-up display when the detected speed limit is exceeded. To provide a warning if the current speed limit is exceeded, the driver’s adjusted speed limit is taken into account.
- Show excess. When this setting is selected, the detected speed limit is displayed as a mark on the speedometer display in the instrument cluster. If a recognized speed limit is exceeded, the speed range exceeded is highlighted in a specific color in the instrument cluster.
Overtaking prohibitions are taken into account only if they are clearly indicated on road signs.
